Non-metals
Nonmetals are, essentially, what's left over on the Periodic Table. They don't have any similarities to metals or metalloids. They are their own thing! They include the noble gases, group 17, and parts of groups 16, 15, and 14.
Group 17, the halogens, are:
Flourine (F) Chlorine (Cl) Bromine (Br) Iodine (I) Astanine (At) Group 18 includes the unreactive Noble Gases: Helium (He) Neon (Ne) Argon (Ar) Krypton (Kr) Xenon (Xe) Ununoctium (Uuo) |
Characteristics of Non-metals ~
Nonmetals have no luster and a therefore dull appearance and are usually quite brittle. They are poor conductors of heat and electricity and aren't ductile or malleable. They have a low density and low melting point, and they also tend to gain electrons rather than lose them.
